Can board games help us to learn about past civilizations?

What makes us who we are?

How can we express who we are through a fun and interactive activity?

At Bogaerts International School North Campus, after finishing their unit on Ancient Civilisations, Middle School Year 1 students decided to go forth and create board games that would allow them to explore the way time, space and circumstances shape an individual's identity. Whether it'd be by racing, building, or guessing, the throw of dice, spinning wheels, or making calculations would ignite thinking.

As students played the games they designed with a chosen audience, they had the opportunity to share aspects of who they really are and also had the opportunity understand their peers more in depth. We can demonstrate our understanding and skills in fun and rigorous ways, and designing these types of engagements is what I value about my role as a teacher and learner.
