As part of a cross-programme initiative grounded in the IB’s core values of communication, collaboration, and international-mindedness, our MYP 2 and PYP 4 students recently participated in a vibrant and enriching Language and Literature CAS experience. This unique event was designed to foster student agency, deepen interdisciplinary understanding, and promote a love of reading through shared inquiry and reflection.
Pairing students across the Primary and Middle Years Programme, the activity centred around the guiding global theme: “How technology impacts our world.” Each student brought along an article of interest, ranging from scientific advancements to digital dilemmas and shared their reflections with their partner. These one-on-one conversations created meaningful opportunities for older students to take on mentorship roles, while younger learners were encouraged to ask questions, make connections, and think critically.
Through this initiative, English A learning objectives were fully activated: integrating and sharing knowledge, developing effective communication skills, and nurturing a lifelong appreciation for literature and thoughtful discussion. Students examined how technology shapes societies, influences relationships, and alters the way we consume and create information, aligning with the IB’s aim to cultivate learners who are inquirers, thinkers, and communicators.
To enhance the experience, students gathered outdoors in our school’s peaceful garden space and enjoyed a healthy picnic together. The informal setting allowed for relaxed conversation, peer bonding, and a greater sense of community. Laughter, curiosity, and mutual respect filled the air as MYP 2 students modelled active listening and collaboration, exemplifying the IB learner profile in action.
This initiative not only strengthened cross-grade relationships but also reinforced the power of literature and discussion in building a caring, inclusive school environment. As we look ahead, we are excited to continue developing creative CAS and Service as Action experiences that inspire meaningful learning and community connection.
