International School - BI School - Brussels / Waterloo

Primary Years Programme

After exiting our EY portion of the Primary Years Programme* (PYP), a student enters Years 1 to 5 of our upper PYP. This programme is for students ages 6 to 11, and focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside, as well as continuing with the life skills lessons that preceded it. In this portion of a student’s schooling, we are guided by six transdisciplinary themes of global significance (rather than just four, as in EY). These are explored using knowledge and skills derived from six subjects areas: language, social studies, mathematics, visual and performing arts, science, and personal, social and physical education. The PYP provides the best preparation for students to engage in the IB Middle Years Programme at the school. It is at this stage that our students begin to see a more traditional model of « schooling » take shape, but the PYP is by no means a strictly traditional learning approach!
The PYP approaches learning as a conceptual process, rather than an information recitation process. We develop a student’s ability to think critically and creatively using challenging and relative ideas, and we use these ideas to help students understand their own decision-making power in the world.
To support this approach, not only do we have highly trained, dedicated staff that support the implementation of the PYP, but we also surround ourselves with resources and techniques that enhance this way of learning about the world. Our math programme, Math in Focus (related directly to the famous Singapore Maths curriculum), is a math curriculum based in thematic learning and relevant learning. Our literacy approach, The Daily 5, is the ultimate literacy approach for an international school that wishes to encourage independent thoughts and actions, as well as a love of reading and language. The rest of our curriculum is then based on staff ingenuity and collaborative work to bring to the table the best possible experiences for our students.

For more information regarding our upper PYP programme, please consult the 2018-2019 Curriculum Handbook and Student/Parent Handbook. For questions, please feel free to contact our PYP Coordinator, Danielle Robertson, at
